Zabalgarbi S.A.

Following a year-long period of trials, Zabalgarbi, S.A. came on line in 2005. The innovative proposal it provided –the SENER System– involved adapting the technology of combined-cycle gas plants to today’s waste-to energy facilities for urban waste (UW). In other words, this meant a ground-breaking industrial design and process in a single, integrated cycle.

This cutting-edge technology involves a qualitative and quantitative improvement in the performance of modern waste-to-energy facilities; as recognized by the European Commission Directorate General for Energy (DG XVII), which awarded the project the highest recognition and funding level through the THERMIE Programme (best available technology – BAT).

The plant’s results bring the province of Bizkaia closer to its ultimate goal of “zero waste”, while also ensuring that part of the electricity we consume is generated from renewable energy sources.
